This is a bit out of date, I just happened to stumble across it here in the Washington Post and thought that it was simply hilarious.
Westboro Baptist did their usual attention seeking thing, I have visions of them all gathered around and muttering, “Oh look, somebody famous has died, lets go protest“. These are folks who don’t just turn up, they announce their plans well in advance, no doubt to ensure the press are around to maximize the publicity.
So what did they claim, why are they against Steve? Well apparently, to quote them, he “gave God no glory & taught sin“. And how did they announce this? Margie Phelps, daughter of the small church’s founder and their lawyer, sent a tweet from her iPhone!!! … to confirm, here it is, and you can see it came from an iPhone.
The Washington Post article explains …
The iPhone-wielding Westboro members seemed unable to find any irony in their embrace of the technology of a man they condemn. One church member even suggested that God was using Jobs to help advance the message of Westboro Baptist Church: “God used Steve Jobs to create amazing STUFF for WBC to preach,” wrote Shirley Phelps-Roper.
Personally I find it to be simply fracking hilarious that their belief system allows them to believe that God used Steve, but at the same time also believe that Steve is in hell.
So what happened? Well, as we now know the funeral was a private affair, so they got nowhere near it. They did turn up in Cupertino and hold a protest, but were outnumbered by Cupertino High School counter protesters who zipped their lips and silently spread the message that “love is the answer,”
So we now all have an interesting choice; where you would rather be, with Steve, or with Margie Phelps? Personally I know who I’d far rather be with. Just five minutes with Margie Phelps would indeed be hell.
I cannot wait until someone decides to run a truck over their ‘protests’.
I will sincerely laugh when that happens.
