Having taken a break for a couple of weeks while I was on the road, I am once again back in action and looking to see if there is any weird religious news that has popped up in the last seven days.
<looks> … nope nothing weird at all … oh wait …
… and so here is my personal selection of the top three from the past week.
Item 1 – Kevin Gugliotta, the gambling priest, collected child porn as revenge against God
Kevin Gugliotta is a Catholic priest who was also rather fond of gambling. Unfortunately for him, he was not very good at it and so he inevitably ended up loosing a lot of money. What comes next is an ever so Catholic Priest reaction. He blamed God for his losses, and decided to take revenge by collecting Child Porn … or at least that was his excuse when caught …
A New Jersey priest says he was trying to get revenge on God for poker losses when he collected computerized child pornography at his weekend home in Pennsylvania, according to his attorney and court records.
The Rev. Kevin Gugliotta was sentenced Thursday to 11½ to 23½ months in the Wayne County jail, receiving credit for 10 months he’s already served. He pleaded guilty in March to a single count of disseminating child pornography after prosecutors dropped dozens of other charges that he possessed and distributed child porn.
Pretrial records show the 55-year-old Gugliotta told probation officers he felt God was attacking him when he lost poker tournaments and games, and got “revenge” by collecting the porn.
This is quite frankly a seriously screwed up way of thinking. It is also rather telling in many respects that the observation that he is a Catholic Priest is not in any way a surprise.
What is perhaps shocking in this specific case is that this is not a first offence for this guy, he has a history that reveals that his Child Porn as revenge was not his real motivation at all.
Gugliotta had previously been suspended from ministry in 2003 for allegedly molesting a teenage boy in the 1980s. But because the incident occurred when he was still a layman and before he entered the priesthood, the Archdiocese of Newark ruled he could not be punished and quietly reinstated him in 2004.
He went on to have a long career in the priesthood, including ministering to youth groups.
Yes, you read that correctly, the church knew this guy was a serious risk to children, but they covered it all up and put him into a position of responsibility that included access to youth groups.
What I truly struggle with is why so many still happily support Catholicism when time after time top officials are demonstrated to have covered up.
Item 2 – Evangelist Kenneth Copeland: Trump Will Win in Afghanistan Because He’s “In the Hands of God”
Kenneth Copeland, one of several prosperity Gospel con men who have used religion to enrich themselves into a lavish lifestyle, has been popping up and making daft claims. Here are the details via Right Wing Watch …
Copeland himself called in to the program and rejoiced that America is finally going to win the conflict in Afghanistan because Trump “has put himself in the hands of God.”
“Everything changes today,” Copeland said. “I believe with all my heart—and I didn’t hear this from the Lord, I just know this from being around a long time—I believe with all my heart that this is truly the beginning of the end. I really do, because this man has adopted correct procedures.”
“This man has put himself in the hands of God,” he continued. “We’re watching the spirit of God give new birth to this nation and we’re going back to the principles—it’s like going back and dancing with the one that brung ya—I mean he’s going back to the principles of this nation that won every war we ever fought until we changed those principles.”
Does he really believe this?
No, not at all. Remember that this guy is a grifter and so he will happily pander to his base and give them the sound bites that they want to hear. His motivation for behaving like this is wholly financial, and so he will happily promote delusional thinking to ensure that his stream of revenue is maintained.
People donated so that he could “promote the gospel”, and he then used those donations to buy himself a $20 million jet and a $6.3 million mansion. This is public knowledge and yet those that donated continue to do so, and are quite frankly gullible enough to believe his claim that his lavish lifestyle is a sign of God blessing him. They don’t appreciate that he is simply manipulating them into impoverishing themselves so that he can maintain his wealth at their expense.
Item 3 – Bryan Fischer: Took “Authority” Over Hurricane Harvey to banish it
Here, via the Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta, is the clip of him doing exactly this (Hemant also blogged the details here) …
… I’m gonna pray aggressively and I want to make it clear that I have no directive from God that this is gonna do the trick. I’m not saying that. I’m praying a prayer of faith. We’re gonna take authority over the storm in Jesus’ name. We’re gonna rebuke this storm in Jesus’ name and all the demonic activity that might be behind it. Remember: Satan came to rob, kill, steal, and destroy. His energy could be behind this storm just as his energy may have been behind the storm that threatened the life of Christ and his disciples…
…
[In prayer]… We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, that you would release that almighty power to restrain this storm, to hold it back, to turn it from the coast of Texas, to turn it back into the Gulf of Mexico where it could no longer threaten lives and threaten property. We pray that you would still these enormously powerful winds, that you would bring them to a place of calm, that you would still the rain, and that you would protect these coastal lands from the flooding and the damage of the windstorm.
And Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, we don’t know what role Satan has in this, but we are going to take authority in your powerful name, Lord Jesus, against any work of Satan that is involved in this. And we speak to the forces of Satan that may be behind this storm, to destroy and to kill, and we rebuke you in the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ. We rebuke the wind. We rebuke the waves in the name of Jesus Christ…
That really worked out well then.
A couple of observations …
- Weather is a wholly natural phenomenon, it is not caused by something supernatural … ever. Pandering to such superstitious thinking is quite frankly absurd.
- As has been illustrated rather well by Mr Fisher, praying to change it in any way will do exactly nothing.
“Pray aggressively.”
